How to Choose and Position a Rabbit Hutch

Some rabbits live inside in rabbit hutches or cages. The majority of rabbits live outside. Here are some tips for purchasing and positioning your rabbit hutch.

Think Big Pet's Rabbit Hutch Tips

1. Position is Really Important

Choose a place that receives the morning sun - this really is the best place. Your rabbit hutch needs to be out of the wind and have some shade.

2. Waterproofing

The rabbit hutch needs to be waterproof and checked regularly for leaks.

3. Size

Your rabbit's hutch should be at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) in length and 610mm (2 feet) wide. As a guide, the rabbit hutch should be:

Wide enough so the rabbit can fully stretch out;
High enough so your rabbit can stand on its back legs;
Long enough so your rabbit can take about four hops to get to the end.

4. Raised from the Ground

Your rabbit hutch needs to be raised off the ground to eliminate dampness. Good ventilation is paramount round the rabbit cage.

5. Rabbit Sleeping Area

Best idea is to have around 1/3 of the rabbit hutch enclosed and a comfortable area for sleeping provided. Rabbits don't like too much excitement and need a quiet spot for them to settle in.

6. Bedding

Think Big Pets suggest a combination of peat moss and wood shaving. Rabbits require a deep layer of straw or shredded paper for sleeping. Avoid quick changes in temperature.

7. Doors on Rabbit Hutches

Doors need to have well secured latches and hatches.

8. Non Toxic Products

Ensure that the products used are non toxic. If you have purchased a timber rabbit hutch, ensure that the stain you use is non toxic.
