Photographing Your Pet

"Quick grab the camera!" you call. Your beautiful pet never looked so cute. So you begin photographing Fido or Casper only to have your pet move so fast that all you capture is the side of his face or even just an ear. Never fear – the age of pet digital photography has arrived. Here are a few hints to take great pet photographs.

Capturing Your Pet on Camera – 10 Tips

1. Take your time and set your digital camera on continuous shooting. As your pet moves around you can be guaranteed that you'll capture the best pet photographic pose. View your pet photographs back and edit on the spot.

2. Be prepared to get down to your pet's level and then start photographing your pet. This could be lying down on the grass or crawling on the carpet. For a horse - sitting in a tree or on the fence.

3. Get up as close as possible to your pet so you can fill the whole lens frame when photographing your pet. It pays to eliminate unnecessary background distractions, for example, the dirty washing waiting on the floor. It is disappointing to have a great pet photograph only to have your pet sprawled out in front of your scrunched up t-shirts. Editing is another matter.

4. Bribe your pet with a snack to take your pet photograph but keep in mind that all they want to do is come up to your hand or pocket to get that snack.

5. Daytime light is great for natural pet photographic shots.

6. Be selective with background colour. A pale golden retriever shows up better against a dark background. Photograph a light coloured pet on a deep coloured rug placed on the carpet or grass. Even dark leafy foliage is a wonderful contrast. A Rottweiler needs to be photographed against something light like a cream coloured throw rug. Photograph a dark coloured pet with a light background.

7. Photograph very active pets (puppies and kittens) whilst they are sleeping – you won't have to worry about red eye.

8. Become familiar with your camera before your pet photo shoot. Photographing your pet can be a great way to get to know your pet and your camera.

9. Eyes are important – they are the window to your pet's soul . The most appealing pet photographs are when your pet is gazing curiously at the camera. If your pet is too active, see 7 above.

10. Use the zoom on your camera so you can focus the photograph on your pet and have the background out of focus.
