Unwanted pets are being put to sleep, usually by injection, at pet pounds across the country. Last year in NSW alone, 24,003 animals were destroyed by council pounds.
According to J. Vallejo and K. Bissett of the Daily Telegraph, NSW Council pounds killed unwanted dogs and cats at the rate of 66 a day last year. Following amendments to the Local Government Act in January last year, council-by-council figures were produced by the first compulsory survey of pounds.

Blacktown Council was reported to be the most ruthless in NSW for euthanasing unwanted pets. The Blacktown Animal Holding Facility kills more dogs and cats, at a higher rate, than any other pound in Sydney. The holding facility also services the areas of Auburn, Lane Cove, Canada Bay, Holroyd, Ryde, Parramatta and Hunters Hill.

Gosford, Pittwater, Hastings, Blue Mountains and Mosman appear to have a "no kill" policy and reported either no deaths or negligible deaths.

Australia needs to highlight the plight of unwanted pets. The award winning musical "Pound" in the USA inspires teens to reach out to unwanted pets and focuses on pets on death row. Maybe one of the acts for this year's Australian Rock Eisteddfod Challenge could be written to make young Australians aware of the deathly existence awaiting pets in pounds! The key focus areas of the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge are Health, Life Skills and Creative Thinking. Community support and information for Australia's unwanted pets would make a great theme. The rock eisteddfod can be contacted at www.rockchallenge.com.au
