What is Flyball? Flyball is a competition for dogs which consists of two teams with four dogs in each team. The dogs race side by side over a 51 foot long course. The dogs must run over the jumps, retrieve the ball by triggering the flyball box and then return over the jumps. The next dog can't cross the start line until the previous dog has jumped over all four jumps and reached the start/finish line. There are normally around 18 to 32 heats in a Flyball Competition. The winning Flyball team is the team that returns first without error. When Did Flyball Start? Flyball started in the late 1960s in Southern California. It has now moved to several different countries and there are Flyball associations in many of these countries. Flyball Equipment The height of the jumps is determined by the height of the smallest dog in the team. The heights are set at 4 inches (10.2cm) lower than the shoulder height of the smallest dog. Benefits of Flyball The dogs and owners have a great time and have the opportunity to compete in a friendly environment. It's a fantastic way to meet people, for you and your dog, and it's also a wonderful way for you both to get fit. Flyball Rules There are four dogs in a team, plus you can have up to two reserves. There are three to five heats to a race and the team that wins the majority of heats will win the race. If the dogs miss the hurdle or drop the ball they are supposed to rerun the course after their team has finished. How Old do Dogs Have to be to Compete at Flyball? Generally dogs should be 12 months old. If you have any concerns about your dog's health, please check with your veterinarian. Conclusion Flyball is a great activity and a wonderful way for your dog to get fit. Contact your local Flyball Association for more details and have fun! Add your comment
