Ten Favourite Dog Games

Dogs love to play games - and as well as having fun being active with your dog can help you both stay fit and healthy. Here are 10 of our favourite dog games for you and your pet to play.

1. Follow the Leader
- Set up different obstacles and your dog has to follow you through the obstacles. Ideas for obstacles include making small jumps, crawling under chairs, walking around trees etc.

2. Hide and Seek - This game is when one person hides and then the dog has to find that person. This was one of my favourite games as a child. My sister and I would hide and then my mum would ask our Labrador Laddie, to find us. We used to play this dog game inside and have a great time.

3. Fetching Games - Dogs love to fetch and you can play this dog game for ages. A word of warning for Bordie Collie owners, they love to fetch so much that one of our Border Collies injured his feet.

4. Swimming - Many dogs love to swim and play with balls in the water. As soon as we start playing with the ball in my backyard pool, my dog Buddie jumps in to play with the ball. Be careful if you have a swimming pool at home, some dogs love the water so much that you need to have the pool fenced.

5. Find the Treat - You hide the treat and the dog has to find it. This dog game can be played inside and outside.

6. Putting Toys into a Basket - You can train the dogs to pick up toys, or objects and put them into a basket or box. If you keep your dog toys in a set basket, this can also be a way of them tidying up their toys.

7. Dancing - Dancing with your dog can be lots of fun. Put on your favorite music, grab your favourite doggie partner and dance away. Be careful not to go to fast, dogs aren’t used to dancing the night away on two legs.

8. Racing Games - Find a target such as a tree or shrub and race your dog to the target. You can do this dog game individually or you can compete against other teams.

9. Tricks - Dogs love to learn new tricks and teaching them how to shake hands can be fun.

10. Tug-a-War - This is one of my favourite dog games I play with my two dogs. There are many great toys you can choose from to play this dog game. I find it works best with a thick rope with a strong hand grip. I play it often with my Labrador and my fox terrier also plays. Although my fox terrier makes a lot of noise playing, he sometimes will bite the Labrador’s collar and play tug-a-war with his collar, rather than the actual toy.
