Oven temperatures vary greatly so when you cook your first batch, watch them closely and adjust the timing if necessary. Do not use these recipes solely as your dog's normal diet. These are treats for your dog to be given alongside your vets diet advice. Think Big Pets' Famous Home Cooked Dog Biscuits
2 cups finely chopped parsley ½ cup finely grated carrot ¼ cup grated cheddar cheese ¼ cup vegetable oil 2 ½ cups wholewheat flour ½ cup unbleached bread flour 1 ½ teaspoons mild paprika 2 tablespoons crushed whole bran cereal 2 teaspoons baking powder ¾ to 1 cup chicken or beef broth Preheat oven to 180 C. Combine parsley, carrot and cheese in a large mixing bowl. Add oil and mix thoroughly. In a separate bowl combine the flours with paprika, bran cereal and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to the large mixing bowl and add ¾ cup broth, stirring well to mix to form moist dough. Add more broth if necessary. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead five times. Roll the dough to a 2cm (1/2") thickness with a floured rolling pin. Using a cookie cutter or scone cutter, cut out shapes and place on baking paper on a baking tray. Bake for 20-30 minutes – depending on size. Biscuits should be brown and beginning to get crunchy. They will develop more "crunch" once out of the oven. Cool on wire rack. Makes about 20 home cooked dog biscuits. Chicken Barley Dog Biscuits
1/4 cup (60ml) vegetable oil 120 g (1/4 p) minced chicken 1 cup (225ml) chicken broth 4 cups (500g) wholewheat flour 2 cups (310g) cooked barley 2 tablespoons dried oregano 2 tablespoons dried parsley 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Preheat oven to moderate heat 180 C. Heat oil in frying pan on medium heat and brown minced chicken, stirring frequently. Slightly cool mixture, add to blender with chicken broth and puree. Place flour, cooked barley, chicken puree, oregano, parsley and Worcestershire sauce in large bowl. Mix thoroughly. Roll dough on floured surface to about 6mm (1/4 inch) thick. Using a cookie cutter or scone cutter, cut out shapes and place on baking paper on a baking tray. With dough scraps get creative and make twists (optional). Bake in oven for 30-35 minutes. Turn off oven and allow cookies to dry in oven for three hours or overnight. Makes about 60 home cooked dog biscuits. Salmon Crunchy Dog Biscuits 4 cups (500g) wholewheat flour 2 cups mashed potato or 5 large potatoes 1 cup (225ml) chicken broth 1x170g (6oz) can salmon, drained 2 tablespoons dried parsley 2 tablespoons dried dill 1/4 cup (60ml) vegetable oil Preheat oven to moderate heat 180 C. Potatoes can be cooked in the microwave oven for five minutes on HIGH (100%) - prick potatoes, wrap in paper towel, place evenly round microwave turntable and cook. Mash potatoes in a large bowl and mix all ingredients thoroughly. Roll out dough on floured surface to about 6mm (1/4 inch) thick. Using a cookie cutter or scone cutter, cut out shapes and place on baking paper on a baking tray until all dough is used. Bake in oven for 30-35 minutes. Turn off oven and allow cookies to dry in oven for three hours or overnight. Makes about 60 home cooked dog biscuits.
