House Puppy Training Ideas You have brought your beautiful new puppy home and now it's time to start house puppy training. There are different methods of puppy toilet training. As with all puppy training, it requires patience, praise and watching your puppy's behaviour. We have included some tips to help make house puppy training easier. Putting Your Puppy Outside to Reduce Soiling Shortly after your puppy has finished eating or around every 45 minutes, or you see them sniffing around, put them in a chosen spot outside and then praise them when they go. It's also recommended to use the same word to praise them so they associate that word with the action. You need to watch your puppy constantly when they are outside and as soon as their bladder and bowels are empty, you can bring them inside again. Although this method takes a while and requires fairly constant supervision, it reduces the animal soiling in the house and has a high success rate. Paper Method To start with you can put papers down around the whole area that the puppy is in. The puppy will normally go in a preferred place. Once you know where this is you can then put down a few sheets of paper in that area. After a meal, or when you see your puppy sniffing round as if they need to go, pick up your puppy and put them on the papers. Praise your puppy after they have gone. After a while you move the papers closer to the door and then eventually you move the papers outside. As well as using papers, there are specially treated scented pads that you can now use that encourage the puppy to go in a certain area. Crate Training for House Puppy Training The Crate Training method involves placing the puppy inside the crate when he is in the house but you are not watching them constantly. Some people use the crate at night and after placing the dog outside to the allocated toilet spot. They put them in the crate to go to sleep. This methods helps train the puppy's bladder as they do not want to soil in the area where they are sleeping. The important thing is to choose the right size crate. It needs to be large enough to be comfortable but if it is too large, the puppy may soil one side of the crate. Wizdog - Puppy Toilet There is a new house puppy training product by Wizdog. It is a puppy toilet made up of a durable plastic pan and a fitted grate. The puppy's waste is dispensed through the grate onto newspaper. The training for this method is similar to the newspaper method and you praise the dog when they use the pet toilet. For more information on this method go to Wizdog. What to do When There is a House Puppy Accident If you have not seen the dog spoil, there is little you can do about it. However, if you catch the dog whilst they are urinating or defecating you can tell them "No" and put them outside. Give them encouragement when they finally go outside. House puppy training is time consuming and requires love and patience. However with most dogs living inside, it is worthwhile spending time training them properly whilst they are puppies.
