Choosing a Cat Choosing a cat to become part of your family is a big decision as your cat may live to the age 15 or longer. Included are some tips to help you choose your cat. 1. Cat or Kitten? Kittens are very cute, however, they need more care whilst they are young and you will need to train them to use the litter box. If you have young children or elderly people living at home, you may be better to purchase an older cat as kittens may scratch and are very demanding. 2. Male or Female Cat? There are not many differences between male and female cats that have been neutered or spayed. However, if you have a male that has not been neutered he may fight with other cats and if you have a female cat, it may yowl whilst on heat. Unless you are a breeder it is generally recommended to have your cat desexed. 3. Purebred or crossbred? There are not many Purebred cats. The advantage of purchasing a Purebred kitten is that it will generally grow up to look and act a certain way. There are many popular breeds of cats such as Siamese which, as well as being beautiful, are known for their affectionate and social characteristics. 4. One or two cats? If the cat will be spending a lot of time alone, it may be better to get two cats so they can keep each other company. Cats are also great to watch when they play together. 5. Long or Short Haired Cats? Both long and short haired cats are beautiful. Long haired cats will require more brushing to keep their coats free of mats. 6. Cost. It may not be expensive to purchase a cat, however you do need to be able to afford the feeding and veterinary care of cats. There are other expenses related to caring for a cat such as cat litter and cat toys such as scratching posts. Add your comment
