Tips on Feeding Your Bird Throughout the world there are many species of birds and some require specialist feeding. We have included general advice on feeding your bird. However, we recommend when purchasing a bird, to check with your breeder as to the requirements of the type of bird you have purchased. There are some great commercial bird seed mixes around which make feeding your bird easy. However, many bird experts recommend that you should also provide fresh fruit and vegetables for you bird. Bird Feed - Fresh Fruits and Vegetables to Feed Your Bird Some ideas of different fresh fruits and vegetables to feed your bird are as follows: Bananas Give the bird the banana with the peel still on which will encourage the bird to tear open their own food. Another idea is to provide an unpeeled apple. As well as providing your bird with some entertainment and exercise, it is also great to balance their diet. Vitamins and Minerals There are powdered vitamins available which you can sprinkle on their fruit and vegetables which contain beneficial bacteria. Cuttle-bone also supplies valuable minerals for birds as well as being enjoyable for them to chew on. Rolled Oats Rolled oats are also good for some birds and help supply energy to your bird during molting. Vegetables Other vegetables to try are items such as corn, carrots and broccoli. Cereals and Breads Cereals and breads can also be given in small quantities. Fresh Water Birds require fresh water and their water should be checked daily. Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Bird Avoid feeding your birds avocado and chocolate as these foods are not suitable for any birds. Although it's great to feed your bird extra treats, always be careful not to overfeeding your bird as it can become overweight and unhealthy. Feeding Wild Birds I enjoy feeding wild birds. I was having breakfast on my front verandah a few days ago when a friendly Magpie flew over, landed a few feet away from me and then came up to me and looked at me as if to say, "Where is my breakfast?" He jumped onto the pot plant next to me and then I shared some of my breakfast with him. My mum also used to enjoy feeding birds and used to have a food tray on her clothes line for the local white cockatoos - she even had names for her favourites. There are many ways of feeding wild birds, from having trays of food available to hanging seed bells from your trees. Another popular way is to purchase a bird feeder. Bird Feeders There are many bird feeders available ranging from decorative bird feeders, to wooden and metal bird feeders, tube feeders to platform feeders. As well as purchasing ready made bird feeders you can also buy bird feeder kits, or you can build your own Bird Feeder. Tips for Buying or Building a Bird Feeder 1. Safety. Your Bird Feeder needs to be in an area safe from dogs and cats. 2. Size. If you are looking for a Bird Feeder for small birds, the Bird Feeder needs to be smaller enough so the birds are safe from larger birds. 3. Safety. Your Bird Feeder needs to be sturdy and well maintained so the birds are safe and secure. Other Ideas for Bird Feeders You can also buy or make Bird Feeders that are edible. There are also feeders that are made to dispense sunflower seeds. What Type of Bird Seed? There are many types of bird seeds available. A few suggestions on Bird Seeds to buy to feed your wild birds are: - Sunflower Seeds; - White Millets; - Peanuts. Birds are wonderful animals.
